The Canby Fire Board has announced the appointment of Deputy Chief Matt Dale as the next Fire Chief at Canby Fire District #62. Chief Dale will replace Chief Jim Davis who is retiring after 51 years of professional service on December 16, 2024.

Chief Dale has been at Canby Fire for the majority of his firefighting career, with 25 years of professional service. He started his career with us as a resident student firefighter in 1993 living at Station 365, and has since filled the role of Captain, Division Chief and promoted by Chief Davis as Deputy Chief in 2023. Chief Dale grew up in Canby as a student within the Canby School District and graduated from Canby High School in 1989. He earned his associate degree in Fire Science from Portland Community College, associate degree for Paramedic from Chemeketa Community College, and his bachelor’s degree in management and organizational leadership from George Fox. Chief Dale is married to his wife, Emily, and has four children and three grandchildren. Chief Dale enjoys swimming, gardening, and is an avid runner.

Chief Dale is currently serving as the Deputy Chief at Canby Fire and is supervising Operations and Emergency Medical Services. Chief Dale has not only been leading Canby Fire’s emergency medical services division but has been a leader on numerous Clackamas County EMS committees, as well as an active member on the new EMS delivery plan, soon to be presented to the Clackamas County EMS Council and the Clackamas County Commissioners.

Chief Davis will continue to serve and work with Chief Dale to ensure a smooth transition of command.

Board Chair Ron Swor, accompanied by the Canby Fire Board Officials, congratulated DC Dale and thanked Chief Davis for supervising the hire process. The Board also wanted to recognize the entire staff and firefighters at Canby Fire for their patience as the Board worked through the hiring process.
